Saratoga County District Attorney Karen A. Heggen announced today that Jose A. Colon (DOB 12/16/1969) was sentenced to ten (10) years in State Prison followed by two-and-a-half (2.5) years of post-release supervision given his plea of guilty to Robbery in the Second Degree, a Class “C” Violent Felony in violation of New York State Penal Law Section 160.10(2)(a), in connection with a violent robbery committed on Caroline Street in May 2023.
The Defendant had previously admitted under oath in the Saratoga County Court to both punching a man and forcibly stealing his wallet following a late-night attack in downtown Saratoga Springs. The victim was rushed to Saratoga Hospital where he was treated for a concussion and several lacerations to his face.
The subsequent investigation by the Saratoga Springs Police Department quickly located and seized numerous surveillance videos and items of physical evidence that were critical to the People’s case. Members of the Saratoga Springs Police Department’s Investigations Division quickly developed Colon as a suspect, placed him in custody that same day, and returned the stolen property to the victim.
“I want to thank both the Saratoga Springs Police Department and the business owners on Caroline Street for their continued cooperation in combatting crime in downtown Saratoga Springs,” said Heggen.
DA Heggen further announced that this was one (1) of two (2) completely separate robberies committed that same weekend in downtown Saratoga Springs, both of which have now resolved with both Defendants having pled guilty to and facing significant State Prison sentences.
Both cases were prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Joseph Frandino together with District Attorney Office Investigator Jack Barney.
