Saratoga County, NY — Saratoga County District Attorney Brett Eby today announced the indictment of Lanessa Stewart on one count of Hindering Prosecution in the Second Degree, a Class E Felony, in violation of New York State Penal Law § 205.60. It is alleged that between October 16 and October 21, 2025, Stewart knowingly rendered criminal assistance to Joseph Hess. Under New York law, a person renders criminal assistance when they harbor or conceal an individual, warn them of impending discovery or apprehension, provide money, transportation, or other means of avoiding detection, or prevent or obstruct, by means of deception, anyone from performing an act that might aid in the discovery or apprehension of that individual.
The charges stem from Stewart’s alleged assistance to Hess following a violent incident in the parking lot of the McDonald’s on October 16, 2025. Hess is charged with Robbery in the First Degree, Assault in the First Degree, and related offenses after allegedly stealing a purse and, while fleeing the scene, striking a 76-year-old woman with his vehicle. The victim sustained serious injuries, including compound leg fractures, and was treated at Albany Medical Center.
“Those who assist individuals in evading law enforcement, particularly in the aftermath of a violent felony, will be held accountable,” said District Attorney Eby. “Our office remains committed to ensuring that anyone who obstructs justice or aids offenders in avoiding apprehension faces appropriate consequences under the law.”
Stewart is scheduled to appear in Saratoga County Court on Thursday, April 16, 2026. The case is being presided over by the Honorable James R. Davis.
