Saratoga County District Attorney Brett Eby also expressed deep gratitude to the community and those who have supported the office’s work during this transition period. He acknowledged the trust placed in him by residents, the collaboration of community leaders, and the ongoing partnership with local law enforcement agencies. Since taking office, Eby noted that he has worked seven days a week without taking a day off, underscoring his personal commitment to serving the people of Saratoga County.
“I am incredibly grateful to the residents of Saratoga County for placing their trust in me, and to our community leaders and law enforcement partners for their continued support,” said District Attorney Eby. “I also want to recognize the outstanding team I was fortunate to inherit. Their dedication and expertise have been critical to everything we’ve accomplished so far. This role is a responsibility I take seriously, and I’ve committed myself fully to the work, putting in long hours every day because the people of this county deserve nothing less.”
Launch of Narcotics and Special Investigations Bureau
A cornerstone of District Attorney Eby’s early initiatives is the creation of the Narcotics and Special Investigations Bureau, led by Chief Meghan Horton. This Bureau is dedicated to dismantling criminal enterprises involved in the sale of controlled substances, illegal firearms trafficking, and human trafficking.
The Bureau collaborates closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to conduct long-term, intelligence-driven investigations using advanced techniques, ensuring that the most dangerous offenders are held fully accountable.
“This Bureau reflects our commitment to taking an aggressive, intelligence-driven approach to some of the most serious crimes facing our communities,” said Eby. “Drug trafficking, illegal guns, and human trafficking threaten public safety and devastate families. This Bureau is designed to confront those threats head-on.”
Increasing Participants in Saratoga County Treatment Court
Since taking office, the District Attorney Brett Eby has made expanding access to treatment courts a top priority, resulting in nearly doubling participation in these programs. This increase underscores a commitment to addressing underlying issues such as substance use and mental health challenges through alternatives to incarceration. By connecting more individuals with treatment, supervision, and support services, the office is helping participants break cycles of offending while improving public safety and strengthening the community.
Strengthening the Special Victims Unit
District Attorney Eby reaffirmed his office’s commitment to protecting vulnerable victims through significant investments in the Special Victims Unit (SVU). Key actions include:
- Retaining highly experienced SVU prosecutors
- Promoting dedicated attorney Rachael Phelan to Chief of the SVU
- Further strengthening the unit through recruitment of experienced SVU prosecutors
- Pursuing strong accountability and tough sentences for sex offenders
Creation of an In-House Appeals Bureau
District Attorney Eby established a new Appeals Bureau, led by Chief Jesse Ashdown. This initiative is expected to save Saratoga County taxpayers six figures annually by reducing reliance on outside counsel.
Beyond cost savings, the Appeals Bureau strengthens the integrity of prosecutions by ensuring appeals are handled by experienced prosecutors who collaborate with trial attorneys from the earliest stages of a case through final resolution.
Formation of Animal Abuse Task Force
In response to a rise in animal cruelty cases, the District Attorney’s Office partnered in the formation of the Saratoga County Animal Abuse Task Force. This collaborative initiative led by Sheriff Jeff Brown, Chairman Phil Barrett, and District Attorney Eby brings together law enforcement, animal welfare organizations, and county officials to enhance the investigation, prosecution, and prevention of animal abuse.
Victim-Based Prosecution Initiative
District Attorney Eby has instituted a victim-based prosecution initiative that places victims at the center of the justice process. This approach ensures that victims are informed, supported, and meaningfully involved at every stage of a case, while prosecutors pursue accountability in a manner that respects victims’ needs, safety, and dignity. By prioritizing communication, trauma-informed practices, and individualized support, the initiative strengthens both the effectiveness of prosecutions and the trust between the community and the District Attorney’s Office.
Developing a Mental Health Court
District Attorney Eby is working to establish a Mental Health Court in Saratoga County within the next year. This underscores a commitment to more effective and compassionate justice system. This specialized court will focus on connecting eligible individuals to treatment and support services while maintaining accountability, with the goal of addressing the root causes of criminal behavior. By prioritizing rehabilitation and reducing recidivism, the initiative is expected to enhance public safety and deliver more positive, long-term outcomes for individuals, families, and the Saratoga County community.
Strengthening Law Enforcement Partnerships
District Attorney Eby has conducted ride-alongs with multiple law enforcement agencies across Saratoga County, working alongside officers in several departments, shifts, and specialized units. These first-hand experiences have strengthened relationships with local law enforcement and provided valuable insight into the challenges officers face in the field.
Enhancing Recruitment of Prosecutorial Talent
The office has strengthened its legal team by recruiting six highly qualified attorneys with meaningful prosecutorial and legal experience. These new hires bring significant courtroom expertise and enhance the office’s ability to handle complex cases and deliver justice effectively.
Forming Community Partnerships
The District Attorney’s Office has improved collaboration with Saratoga County Health and Human Services Impact Sector members and school districts throughout Saratoga County. These partnerships focus on early intervention, prevention, and support services ensuring a more coordinated response to issues impacting youth, families, and vulnerable populations.
Strengthening Investigative Capacity
The District Attorney’s Office has significantly enhanced its investigative capabilities by utilizing its six experienced law enforcement professionals. These investigators work hand-in-hand with prosecutors to build strong, evidence-based cases from the outset, improving outcomes and ensuring thorough case development.
Improving Security
Recognizing the importance of safety for staff, victims, and the public, the District Attorney has implemented measures to improve security within office, helping ensure a safe and secure environment for all participants in the justice process.
Looking Ahead
As he moves beyond his first 100 days, District Attorney Eby emphasized that these initiatives are only the beginning of a broader effort to enhance public safety, improve efficiency, and build trust within the community.
“We are building a stronger, more responsive District Attorney’s Office, one that reflects the values and needs of Saratoga County,” Eby said. “The work continues, and we remain committed to protecting our residents and pursuing justice with integrity.”
