Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office

The Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office is a busy prosecutors office just north of the Albany capital, serving over two hundred and thirty thousand people in 19 towns and two cities.  Led by District Attorney Karen A. Heggen, the office works closely with the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors, community based not-for-profits and the Saratoga County community.  The District Attorney’s Office enjoys an excellent working relationship with the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department, the New York State Police, and the 12 other local law enforcement agencies in Saratoga County.  Applicants should demonstrate a commitment and duty to work as a public servant, consider it an honor to represent the People of the State of New York and exercise judicious discretion in the evaluation of criminal cases and investigations.  The position of assistant district attorney includes responsibilities in town and village courts, county court and presentations before the grand jury. 

Assistant District Attorney Positions Available

Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office seeks candidates for an Assistant District Attorney position. The successful candidate should have experience handling criminal cases.  Experience with preliminary hearings, grand jury presentations and trial work is a plus.  Duties and responsibilities will include vertical prosecution of a wide range of cases. Admission to the New York State Bar required.  Salary is commensurate with experience, starting at $100,071. See application process below.

Assistant District Attorney (Appeals) Position Available

The Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office seeks an experienced candidate for a full-time Assistant District Attorney position, with primary emphasis on appellate work.  The successful candidate should have a strong background in research and writing, with experience handling all aspects of post-conviction litigation, including direct appeals, appellate division motion practice, and habeas corpus matters.  A minimum of 2 years experience in the practice of criminal law is preferred.  Admission to the New York State Bar is required.  Salary is commensurate with experience, starting at $100,071. Application Process

Interested applicants should forward a cover letter, resume, writing sample, statement of interest and names of references and a description of the reference’s relationship to the applicant.  Your statement of interest should illustrate your reason for seeking a position in public service with our office as well as information about your academic experience both inside and outside of the classroom.   In addition, please detail, the kinds of cases you have tried; the bureau to which you were assigned, if any, and other relevant information.  Once we have received your information it will be reviewed for completion, conformance with the directions of the application process, and rated in order to determine whether the application will advance to the next phase.  The following phases generally include interviews with prosecutors in groups, which often can be with a panel of two or more.  Assuming successful completion of the phases, the final interview is with the District Attorney.  Your application for assistant district attorney (for internships see below) must include:

Internships

Qualifications/General Information:

  • law_studentThe Saratoga County DA’s Office hires law school and limited college interns during the summer, Fall and Spring semesters. Students with any major may apply.
  • Summer law Interns are expected to work 35 hours a week over the course of ten weeks.
  • Fall and spring  law interns are expected to work 14 hours a week over the course of the semester and be currently enrolled in a law school and provide appropriate forms for course credit.  If selected you will be certified by the Appellate Division, Third Department to handle limited court appearances while being supervised by an attorney.
  • Law and college interns are unpaid.

Investigations, Crime Victim Unit and Support Staff positions

 

Full-time Position Available: The Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office seeks a candidate to fill a full-time Senior Clerk position. Typical work activities include: sorting and reviewing documents and correspondence; responding to in person and phone inquiries from the public and other County departments; maintaining a variety of confidential records, reports, and files; operating various office equipment, such as personal computer, copier, & fax machine; and other related work.  The minimum qualifications are: (A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college with an Associate’s Degree in Secretarial Science, Office Management, Business Administration, or closely related field, and two (2) years of clerical or administrative support experience which shall have involved the use of a personal computer and the maintenance of detailed and sensitive information; OR (B) Graduation from High School or possession of a high school equivalency certificate (GED) and four (4) years of clerical or administrative support experience which shall have involved the use of a personal computer.
